Federal To Debut Complete Motorsport Series
Federal Tire plans to make the most of the opportunity provided by the Tyrexpo Asia exhibition and debut not one, but two complete motorsport series. The range, known collectively as “Federal Motorsport” is made up of the “595 Competition Series” and the “FZ Combat Series.”
In addition, Federal will also unveil the new Couragia M/T all terrain tyre, and the Milanza HZ-I, a brand new Hero brand UHP tyres. The company’s Himalaya WS-I winter product, Couragia S/U, Formoza FD-I and Hero branded 558 and 668 tyres will also be on display.
The 595 Competition series has evolved from Federal’s popular SS595. Now the tyre has been renamed as simply the 595 and has spawned three variations, the 595 Drift Competition, 595EVO Street Competition and 595RS Sport Competition.
Competition series
The 595 Drift Competition underwent some “slight technical changes” in order to equip tyre for the abuse that is part and parcel of any drifting competition. This modification was reportedly the result of revelations that professional drifters in Japan often used the former SS595 in competition often with winning results.
The 595EVO – Street Competition, on the other hand, is said to combine the best performance features of the SS595 with new technological advances. These include a new 3D tread design, which features “groove within a groove” technology and the company’s latest compound formulated specifically for asphalt road competition.
Rounding off the Competition Series is the 595RS – Sport Competition, a new semi-slick tyre. According to the company, this variation provides the best performance in its class and is “a street legal competition tyre with the characteristics of a slick.” The 595 RS will be available in 13 sizes, including 15, 16, 17 and 18-inch wheel diameters, and series 35, 40, 45, 50 ratios.
Designed to deliver Federal’s enhanced dry performance, the 595RS uses one tread block for the entire tread surface. This is said to increase stiffness and enhance cornering grip, while optimising power transition during braking and accelerating. According to Federal “high specific surface area carbon provides for the quickest tyre warm-up time possible for instant performance.”
The 595RS was initially launched at the TIS Circuit in Taiwan and was covered by editors and reporters from magazines including Car & Driver, Motor and European Car. Journalists tested the tyre fitted on a Mercedes CLK320. Customer Jacques Gravel, VP Canada Tire, was also present. “The tyre is extremely responsive and predictable. The 595RS handles very well considering the weight of the CLK,” the ex-racing driver commented.
Combat series
Then there is the limited edition FX Combat Series. This is comprised of the FZ-101 and the FZ-102.
The FZ-101 is Federal’s all new, racing profile slick tyre. This product features a newly designed compound, which is combined with an extremely wide contact area and sidewalls that are reinforced with steel fillers. Exclusively produce in limited numbers for professional use only, the company says.
Then there is the FZ –102. According to Federal, this model uses a new tread block design and increases stiffness in order to ensure constant contact with road surface. The tread profile has been optimised to deliver performance in straight-line sprints and high speed cornering, the company reports. Again this limited edition product is also said to be intended for professional use only.
The complete Federal Motorsport ‘package’ is the result of years of research and development at the Federal Technology Center, the company says.
