WRAP Programme To Support Tyre Recycling
WRAP (the Waste & Resources Action Programme) is to allocate “a large part” of the first year’s budget to developing existing processes and exploring “novel applications.” In a statement WRAP reports that it has begun work on developing the UK used tyre market. The aim of the programme, which is part of Defra’s new Business Resource Efficiency and Waste initiative (BREW), is to increase the inherent value of recycled tyres by stimulating market demand for higher value products.
In addition, a tender process for research and development projects, operational and demonstration trials has just been launched to explore the opportunities for recycled rubber derived from post-consumer waste tyres in applications such as civil engineering, construction and surfacing, as well as a range of other materials and products.
WRAP says it also aims to carry out an assessment of existing tyre material flows and end-use market values, “establishing best practice case studies.”
“We have to understand the needs of the supply chain, and the establishment of an effective stakeholder forum has been a priority for WRAP,” says WRAP director of materials, Liz Goodwin. “Consultation will be essential to the delivery of sustainable recycling solutions for waste tyres in future.”
