Silverstone Produces More ‘Premier Tyres’
Silverstone Bhd has expanded its range of premier tyres to remain competitive in the market, according to managing director Phang Wai Yeen.
“We have been paying lot of attention to research and development since our inception in 1990 and that is why we have been making headway in the luxury and motor sport segments,” Mr Phang said during a visit by Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Datuk Peter Chin to the company’s plant in Kamunting, near Taiping.
Mr Phang to the Malaysia Star that Silverstone were well known among racing enthusiasts and its tyres were widely used in motor rallies, track racing, hill climbing and off-road events.
“In Sweden, known as the land of rally drivers, there are about 10,000 registered drivers. Every week, our tyres are used in their competitions…We are even penetrating similar markets in South America, New Zealand and Canada,” he added.
Silverstone is also the eighth tyre company to be recognised by the International Automobile Federation, the world motor sport sanctioning body, as a manufacturer of tyres for international competitions.
The company exports 30 per cent of its annual production to more than 60 countries. Its major markets are Europe, Australia and Japan.
The company’s Kamunting plant has the capacity to produce 2.3 million tyres a year but is currently rolling out 1.8 million tyres annually.
