Kwik-Fit Breaks Tyre Rolling World Record
Kwik-Fit staff, friends and family have successfully set a new Guiness World Record for simultaneous tyre rolling. In doing so they helped to raise over £30,000 for the Tsunami Appeal. The attempt, held at Chester Race Course resulted in 238 people each rolling a tyre over 100 metres, narrowly breaking the previous world record by just one person.
The event was the brainchild of Kwik-Fit employee Stuart Livingstone who, when trying to come up with a way to raise money for the Tsunami Appeal, thought the firm should put one of its main products to use in a mass participation event. To his delight the idea received widespread support both within Kwik-Fit and the big tyre manufacturers.
“Stuart’s idea clearly struck a chord amongst those who have given so generously in time and money to support this world record attempt. Our thanks are due to our staff as well as their families and friends, those individuals and companies that have given so generously as well as to the local community as whole for being so supportive,” commented Brian Redhead, commercial manager of Kwik-Fit’s Western Division.
Companies representing all corners of the motor industry including car and tyre manufacturers, fleet management companies and rental operators agreed to donate money by sponsoring tyres at £500 each. The previous record for simultaneous tyre rolling was set on 2 June 2004 by pupils and staff at Fermanagh Elementary School in Pennsylvania, US. This attempt involved 237 people rolling one tyre each over 100 metres. The money raised will from the most recent effort will be donated to the Disaster Emergency Committee Tsunami Appeal.
