Bridgestone Replaces Avon as GP2 Supplier
Bridgestone recently took over as the sole tyre supplier of the GP2 motorsport series. Already a supplier to Formula 1, the Japanese company has decided to become the sole supplier of GP2 which has replace F3000 as the primary support series for F1. Previously Cooper’s Avon brand was the GP2 series supplier
“Bridgestone has a long history of supporting young drivers in Japan and the US as they learn their skills in the junior categories, but, here in Europe, Bridgestone is only involved in karting, so we are delighted to have been given this opportunity to work alongside Renault and support young, up-and-coming drivers through the GP2 Series,” Bridgestone’s motorsport director Hiroshi Yasukawa, said. “What is exciting for these drivers is that the equipment is the same, giving everyone a fair chance to prove themselves.”
Cooper, at the same time, has focused its race tyre attention on the new FIA-sanctioned A1 Grand Prix, a high-level international road course series that is set to begin this Autumn. Its Cooper brand race tyres, produced at its Avon plant in Melksham, will be the control tyre.
