Will F1 Lose a Tyre Supplier?
The FIA is still deliberating over whether or not to adopt just one tyre supplier for future Formula One series’ according to reports from Autosport magazine.
The association’s president, Max Mosley suggested the change in an effort to cut the F1 teams’ costs, saying that too much of the teams’ budget is spent on testing new compounds.
It is thought that the suggestion will be dropped in favour of a restriction on the use of ‘exotic’ materials, however the deliberations will continue when the team principals meet tomorrow.
“The tyre war is not only killing F1 competition and stopping the lesser-funded teams from running near the front, but it’s by far the single biggest cost saving we could make,” one of the sport’s technical directors told Autosport. “The tyre war is ten times any other cost. It’s no problem to save on these smaller things (like exotic materials) but it’s senseless to continue with the tyre war and it’s completely against everything else that Max has been preaching.”
