DIY Garage Opens in Aberdeen
The UK’s first “DIY garage” has just opened its doors in Aberdeen. The new workshop facility is targeted at those who enjoy carrying out motor vehicle repairs, but don’t have access to the necessary tools or facilities.
The opening of The DIY Garage follows a recent undercover Which? magazine survey criticising the quality of service at some garages. Which? booked 48 cars into garages for a full service, introducing three faults that should be picked up in a service. 67 per cent of garages failed to pick up pre-existing faults in the cars, such as nails in tyres, and 69 per cent failed to spot faults deliberately introduced by investigators, such as split windscreen wiper blades.
Commenting on the opening co-owner, Stan Clements, said: “The DIY Garage is a unique concept that will help vehicle owners and repairers to reduce their motoring costs and also learn more about the maintenance of their vehicles. For the first time ever we are offering people access to a purposely designed workshop where repairs and maintenance can be carried out in a clean, dry and safe working environment. The response so far has been extremely positive and with winter here we are expecting demand for the indoor services to be high.”
According to Mr Clements, visitors to the garage will be able to hire a wide range of equipment by the hour including; work bays, hydraulically operated vehicle lifts (ramps), hand and specialist tools, a motorcycle/scooter hydraulic lift, headlamp and wheel alignment equipment, engine lifting equipment and hydraulic floor jacks.
Trained employees will be on hand to offer advice and assistance to users. In addition, the DIY garage will run basic training sessions for people who would like to know more about their vehicles. The training sessions will focus on carrying out essential checks such as tyre conditions and pressures as well as radiator water; engine oil and screen wash levels.
