Sauber Berate F1 Tyre Suppliers
The ongoing rivalry between Michelin and Bridgestone is having too much effect on the outcome of races, according to a BBC interview with Sauber team owner, Peter Sauber.
“For us, this fight between two manufacturers continues to present a problem,” said Peter Sauber. “The top teams are using two thirds of their testing for tyre development and we cannot keep up with that,” he added. The battle between Bridgestone and Michelin is also said to have caused lap times to plummet in recent years. Sauber believes tyres should not have such a significant effect on race results.
“Because the developments have reached such extreme levels, it has become incredibly difficult to select the right tyres and to make optimum use of them during a race weekend” he said. “Track temperatures rising or falling by just a few degrees can make all your plans go awry. The influence of tyres on the results has simply become too strong nowadays.”
Mr Sauber’s comments come in light of the current debate as to whether or not Formula 1 should only have on tyre supplier. His remarks are sure to add fuel to the fire of the one supplier argument.
