BMW Motorsport Director Concerned About F1 Tyres
Dr Mario Theissen, BMW Motorsport director, has raised concerns about the increasing amount of tyre damage that is taking place on the Grand Prix circuit.
Dr Theissen’s comments come in light of a Belgian Grand Prix that required the safety car no less than three times. At least one of the accidents was caused by tyre failure. Dr Theissen said that the large amount of tyre damage is becoming a critical safety factor and requires urgent analysis.
According to the BMW Motorsport director, the reason behind the tyre damage has to be found and whether external effects, like sharp fragments of car wreck parts played a part. The question of whether the tyres were overstretched at the Belgian Grand Prix has also been raised. “If you want to improve the safety of Formula 1, then tyres and maintaining a clean track are the priorities,” Dr Thiessen said.
