Goodyear Dunlop Pursues Planning Permission for Wolverhampton Plant
Goodyear Dunlop Tyres UK will pursue a formal planning application with Wolverhampton City Council for the development of the 90 acre Stafford Road site.
After detailed discussions with the council Goodyear Dunlop decided to put forward a proposal to develop its manufacturing operations on the site that it first opened in 1927.
If the planning application succeeds the company will transform the location into a mixed-use site, and the company anticipates that up to 1200 jobs will be located on the site. Goodyear Dunlop intends to, “invest in developing its core activities,” including primary processing and truck tyre retreading. The current production of agricultural tyres will continue to be phased out and the unused parts of the site will be redeveloped for residential, social and leisure purposes.
Andrew Harper, production director for Goodyear Dunlop in Wolverhampton said: “This plan has been developed in order to protect many of our existing jobs on the site and also to create new job opportunities in Wolverhampton by allowing the regeneration of the unused parts of the site. It is still only a proposal, but the cooperation shown by our workforce and external bodies has encouraged us to examine ways in which a sustainable Goodyear Dunlop manufacturing entity can be retained on site, as well as other uses beneficial to the community as a whole. If the proposal is accepted, I am confident that we can build a profitable, world-class business in Wolverhampton.
“We sincerely hope that the positive intentions shown to date by everyone concerned can be continued through the period of planning consultation.”
