“Intelligent Tyre System” From Goodyear
Goodyear has revealed details of what it calls “industry’s only commercially available intelligent tyre system” at a mining exhibition in Las Vegas. The company’s stand features a live data feed of the system in use at a Canadian mine, where a 240-ton truck has each of its six 40.00 R57 tyres fitted with an intelligent transponder, 3″ in diameter and 1.
3″ thick, fastened to the inner liner. Here it measures cavity temperature and pressure and transmits this data every three minutes to an in-cab receiver or a remote location. The system enables operators to see on a real time basis which tyres are becoming hot and allows them to take remedial action such as changing routes.
The system, says Goodyear, will help operators control tyre costs and reduce downtime significantly. The system is being launched at the show and Goodyear says that it expects to have 250 transponders in action by the end of the year, with full commercialisation early in 2001..
